No end to Amritsar Garbage

The Bhagtanwala garbage dump controversy has turned the holy city of Amritsar into a stinking place with trash lying everywhere in the city as the civic body stopped clearing the containers placed across the city.

Then we took a round of the city, found garbage littered on main roads and garbage containers overflowing as the municipal body has stopped clearing of the trash. Garbage heaps could be seen lying outside schools and hospitals also.

“Our job is to lift the garbage and we are ready for that but we are not being allowed to dump it on lands we own,” said mayor Bakshi Ram Arora. He said he had taken up the issue with both the chief minister and deputy chief minister. “What else can I do, it is the duty of the administration to provide us dumping site,” he said, adding that residents around Bhagtanwala dump yard were forcibly preventing safai sewaks from entering the dumping site.

He said in an effort to pacify the residents of 17 residential colonies near the Bhagatanwala dump, the Amritsar municipal corporation had pressed into service six machines to lift the garbage from the dump yard and fill a pit. “After that we will cover the dump with soil and grow grass over it,” he said.

President of Sanjhi Sangarash Committee Nirmal Singh said, “We have been staging a dharna against the dumpyard for the past 27 days but nothing has been done so far except AMC had sent some machines to clear the garbage on Saturday”. He said they would continue their agitation till the dump was turned into a garden. “We have suffered a lot, but now we will not settle anything less than this,” he said.

Local Residents said the trash was bound to be there and it was duty of AMC to lift and dump it at proper site. “We know it feels bad to throw garbage outside the house but give us an option,” they said.

In absence of lifting of garbage by AMC’s safai sewaks, private scavengers lift the garbage from houses and dump them in any open site or on any vacant plot in the city.
